A volcano eruption on New Zealand's North Island has led to road closures and flight cancellations.
Hundreds of travellers have been stranded following the eruption of Mt Tongariro, which has been dormant for more than a century. Rocks and ash were thrown up to a kilometre from the mountain.
Air New Zealand flights to Gisborne, Rotorua, Taupo and Napier and Palmerston North, were delayed or cancelled following the eruption, affecting flights to and from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
There have been no reports of injuries or damage although authorities are keeping a close watch and have not ruled out further volcanic activity over the next few weeks.
Fortunately this shouldn't cause any hassle for UK cruisers as there are no cruise ships sailing North Island at the moment, most cruiselines head there for their summer months. The only ship in New Zealand this month is Sun Princess which is due to call at Auckland on the 25th August. This is many miles away from the volcano and not an embarkation port so the ship will not be effected by this.
My thoughts are with those stranded and living in the area.
